Peter Guth

A life devoted to music and to the legacy of Johann Strauss.

For the Strauss Jubilee Orchestra, the collegial partnership between Daniel Auner and Peter Guth is an essential part of its success. Guth brings decades of experience, holds a sheet music archive that includes rarely played orchestral material, and advises Daniel Auner and the management on questions of orchestral direction and programme building.

An internationally recognised interpreter of the genre, Peter Guth is among the foremost ambassadors of Viennese music. He studied violin at the Vienna Academy of Music and, as an Austrian scholarship holder, spent three years with David Oistrakh at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow. Over a long career he toured the world with the Vienna Trio, appeared as a concerto soloist, worked as concertmaster and teacher, and engaged with contemporary music.

As director of the Johann Strauss Ensemble of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra he acquired a comprehensive command of this repertoire, and in 1978 founded his own Strauss Festival Orchestra Vienna, which he led as far as Japan and China and directed artistically for forty-seven years. Above all, he has been invited as guest conductor and specialist in Viennese music by more than a hundred international symphony orchestras.
