For Daniel Auner, conducting is not a change of profession but its continuation. The movement of the bowing arm translates into the conductor’s beat — a connection he turns to advantage in the Viennese tradition of the “Stehgeiger”, the standing violinist who directed the orchestra from the first desk.

In the Golden Hall of the Wiener Musikverein, Daniel Auner conducts the Orchestra of the Vienna Volksoper, with the violinist Benjamin Schmid as soloist.

As principal conductor and artistic director, Daniel Auner shapes five concerts each year. The repertoire ranges from works for choir and orchestra — the Requiem by Johannes Brahms, Carmina Burana — through major symphonic literature to instrumental concertos across a range of styles. Venues include the Wiener Musikverein, the Stadttheater Mödling, Burg Perchtoldsdorf and Schloss Laxenburg.

Soloists have included Rebecca Nelson, Diana Alexe, Christoph Immler, Gunther Haumer, Dominik Wagner, Christoph Stradner, Thomas Auner, Dalibor Karvai, Adela Liculescu and Mitra Kotte. The orchestra runs an education programme with open rehearsals for school groups.

As violinist and leader of the Vienna Hofburg Orchestra, Daniel Auner revives in the Mozart Hall of the Wiener Konzerthaus the old philharmonic practice of directing from the violin. The focus is on opera and operetta: works by Mozart, Johann Strauss, Fritz Kreisler, Lehár and Kálmán, joined by soloists and ballet. Around twenty concerts each season.

His own orchestra, founded to mark the 200th anniversary of Johann Strauss, led as conductor and standing violinist. Daniel Auner was introduced to this repertoire by Peter Guth, who accompanies him as a mentor.

Four years of regular conducting studies with Conrad Artmüller, Kapellmeister at the Vienna Volksoper, with particular attention to Mozart’s operatic repertoire, alongside group tuition with Joji Yuasa in Vienna.
